The village tour I did today was not as good as expected. But still interesting, one of the places visited was the Templo de San Juan in San Juan de Chamula. There are no pews inside, pine needles cover the floor and clouds of incense fill the air. Thousands of flickering candles of all shapes and sizes fill every surface and also the floor, no photos are allowed to be taken in here, but I've included one from the internet. the religion seemed to be a combination of Mayan and Catholic beliefs. Also outside they were continually firing rockets which were exploding in the air.
Even now late in the evening I can hear these Bombas or exploding sky rockets can be heard all of the time and are used for any kind of celebration, they just shoot and explode without any actual colours or pyrotechnics.
I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the town and markets, many of the streets are for pedestrian only which is really good as the roads are not very wide and the side walk only wide enough for one person.
Tortillas are served and eaten with every meal including breakfast, made from corn flour mixed with lime and water to a dough, then pressed flat and baked on a flat plate. The lime (calcium hydroxide) makes it more nutritious by releasing the niacin in the corn, and easier to digest.
