San Cristobal day 3 - Sumidero Canyon

Today we went on a tour of Sumidero Canyon, a very relaxing time cruising for 30 kms through the pretty gorges which are up to 1 km deep, watching the local wildlife and  waterfalls some coming straight out of the rocks.

Halfway along the river there seems to be a dead spot where everything floating on the river seems to stop, twice we were stuck in a mass of tree branch's  and refuse.  But the beauty of this river is not defeated by this because apart from the rubbish it is a natural collection point for the river. To get through this the boat attacked the floating mass like it was ice going forward and back, again and again, until it finally broke through.

After this we visited a local town for a break. I had a quesadillas from a street vendor made of some spicy sausage and cheese and a refreshing Grande horchata, (rice milk drink)

I'm not sure why the highway's here are marked as nobody seems to take any notice of the lines. The roads are very wide and have a central marking of solid or dashed lines and on the sides are what look like a space marked off for bikes, but there are no bikes using them. Instead the cars drive half on this and half on the road leaving a space down the centre which anyone can use to overtake, double line or not, it seems to work as the drivers here are very courteous moving over and giving way.
