Our reward for the long riding day yesterday is to spend two nights in the Okavango Delta. This vast inland delta, formed where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough in the central part of the Kalahari, is a Unesco World Heritage site. So the ride today a much shorter leg on good tar roads, into Maun, on which the only hazard and points of interest are the semi domestic animals on the roadside, at one stage though we nearly hit a warthog that instead of running away, zigzagged over the road in from of us just missing one of the bikes. We arrived at Maun airport by 11 to catch a short flight in a small plane to Oddballs Camp where I will stay for 2 nights.
It was a bit disappointing to see the area so dry as we flew to oddballs camp, there has been little summer rain and the area is late to flood which would have given us the view often seen of the flooded Okavango Delta. The river where we are staying was dry 2 days ago, but has just started to run with the water coming from the north and attracting animals. I couldn't get to my tented accommodation as the path was blocked by a large male elephant, once there though the view across the veld was spectacular, with elephants visible from my front door.
On my way to lunch I came across the 2 elephants that were still in camp and watched as they stripped leaves from the trees with their trunks and stuffed them into their mouths. Before our dinner we go on a 2hr walking safari where we see numerous animals, but most are at a distance and without my zoom camera I cannot take any decent photos.
