Leaving the Bay of Islands behind, we head west towards the seaside settlements of Opononi and Omapere before traveling through the majestic Waipoua forest, where we saw Tāne Mahuta, the country's largest Kauri tree, 4.4mtrs diameter and approximately 2,000 years old. On through the forest of huge kauri trees and tall tree ferns along the road's edge. This was another long day over 400 km and the roads we have been riding on have been constantly winding and twisting through the forest and countryside, so much that my shoulders are quite sore tonight, then on to Auckland where we were caught up in the peak hour traffic to get to the hotel.
